and make planning for your death a positive experience.

In Bhutan, a country located in the Eastern Himalayas of South Asia, a person is encouraged to think about their death at least 5 times daily. Despite this, the Bhutanese are often revered as the happiest people on Earth.

At first glance, it seems confusing how this country can be known for their gross national happiness when they constantly think and meditate about death so often.

Having practiced in estate planning for several years, we often experience fearful clients who are intimidated by the estate planning process because they know it will require conversations about their death and possible incapacity. And oftentimes, this fear prevents many clients from taking the steps necessary to plan for their own future and the future of their families and loved ones.

In fact, we are often asked by clients, friends, colleagues, and even our own relatives how we keep such a positive outlook on life when most of our day is consumed by the topic of death. And our answer is always the same: “In order to be happy, it is critical to contemplate your death at least 5 times each day”. We have learned this directly from the Bhutanese folk saying. And it makes perfect sense - thinking about death in general and contemplating your own death, more specifically, is liberating because it forces you to focus on the important aspects of your life. Letting go of small, stressful moments and insignificant matters become much easier once you remind yourself that life is fleeting, and therefore, is precious.

Our purpose when creating custom estate plans is to help protect you and your family, but most importantly, help make planning for your death a positive experience.
